Join us at the 8th annual Montana Film Festival
at The Roxy Theater in Missoula, Montana,
October 12-15, 2023
The ninth annual Montana Film Festival invites you to Big Screen Country to celebrate independent filmmaking October 12 - 15. This year’s lineup, hosted at the Roxy Theater, features ten feature-length and 19 short films as well as parties, a live script reading, and a two-day intensive course, plus numerous Q&A sessions and talkbacks with filmmakers.
The Montana Film Festival promotes bold independent films from around the world, engaging its community with remarkable shared cinematic experiences. This year’s festival hosts several Montana-made films, including crime drama Blood for Dust (10/13 & 10/14), starring Kit Harington and Scoot McNairy, and fish-out-of-water story Tokyo Cowboy (10/13 & 10/15), about a Japanese salaryman who comes to Montana to run a struggling cattle ranch. Crew from Tokyo Cowboy will be around for Q&As following both screenings. Short film Double Nickel, shot in Missoula, will screen on October 12 and 13, with both screenings featuring a talkback with the film’s cast and crew.
Renowned former Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan joins the festival on October 12 for a special 35mm screening of Clint Eastwood’s classic Unforgiven, a favorite film he has written about extensively. Kenneth will be discussing the film and presenting memorabilia from its initial release after the screening.
MTFF has always been committed to showing films representing many different genres, and this year is no exception. Rising star Lily Gladstone shows up in this year’s selection Fancy Dance, a powerful drama about a Seneca-Cayuga woman searching for her missing sister while also helping her niece prepare for an upcoming powwow (10/12, 14 & 15). Queer coming-of-age film and superhero parody The People’s Joker, a brilliant take on the nature of fandom, screens on October 14. Simon Rex, Jacob Elordi, and Ayo Edebiri star in acclaimed cinematographer Sean Price Williams’s directorial debut The Sweet East, chronicling a high school senior’s picaresque journey across a fractured fairytale America, on October 14 and 15. Other films screening include teenage-cinephile comedy I Like Movies (10/14 & 15), lyrical A24 drama All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt (10/13 & 15), soulful Bronx tale starring Luis Guzman, Story Avenue (10/13 & 14) and Australian thriller The Royal Hotel (10/12 & 15). A cowboy-themed shorts block anchored by Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal screens on 10/13 & 10/15. The additional short films curated by MTFF run the gamut from experimental animation to gorgeous tone poem to meta-comedy, with seven different countries represented.
To continue to grow and train Montana’s local film workforce, MTFF partners with Accelerate Montana to offer a two-day production assistant intensive run by Lynn-Wood Fields on October 12 - 13. The PA course focuses on film terminology and lingo, paperwork, and walkie-talkie protocol. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a course-completion certificate and should be able to walk onto film sets with all the knowledge they need to get started on a career in film production. Interested participants can sign up for this course at Accelerate Montana: (https://www.acceleratemt.com/all-courses/film-and-media-introduction-to-production-doc).
This year’s MTFF includes a few free events, starting with a Shorts Block that kicks off the festival on October 12. The shorts program includes several Montana-made short films, and a Q&A with the filmmakers in attendance will follow the screenings. On October 15, Richard Fifield’s captivating novel The Flood Girls will be brought to life with an exclusive first reading of the script. The audience will embark on an unforgettable journey of the rich characters and compelling narrative of this Montana-set, female-driven story.
And don’t forget the parties, where festival attendees can meet and mingle with the artists behind their favorite new films. On Wednesday, October 11, the festival hosts a movie trivia night at Cranky Sam’s at 7pm, with prizes for the top teams. On Friday October 13 there will be a MTFF Montgomery Distillery Happy Hour from 3 - 5pm. The annual Hip Strip Soiree at Clyde Coffee will follow the Saturday night screenings on October 14.
Montana Film Festival passes are on sale now. All-Access Passes are $80. Single screening tickets are $10 and Roxy member, senior, and student prices apply. Festival parties are free and open to the public. Visit montanafilmfestival.org for event listings and program access.
