Landscape Geology Driving Tour
10:00 AM (America/Denver)
Montana Natural History Center
Landscape Geology Driving Tour Description:
DATE: Friday, November 5

TIME: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

LOCATION: Meet at the Montana Natural History Center, 120 Hickory St.

Gain an understanding of the processes shaping our local landscape on a driving tour with geologist Bruce Baty.

As Bruce discusses Glacial Lake Missoula, faulting, river bed dynamics, erosion, and more you will see the world around you as a drama of ancient and ongoing geologic events. Drive over forgotten river terraces, see evidence of faulting, and investigate the history of our local topography. We will begin with a discussion of Glacial Lake Missoula in the Montana Natural History Center. We will then caravan across Missoula stopping at points of interest and ending in East Missoula. We will fill in a provided map to provide a visual record of the information.

Note: You will need a car for this trip though you are welcome to carpool with friends

Driving Route:
We will meet outside of the Montana Natural History Center, and then drive our own vehicles to local river terraces on 3rd Street and behind St. Patrick’s Hospital. Traveling to Lolo Street in the Rattlesnake, we will view more river terraces before heading to Marshall Grade east of East Missoula. At this site we will discuss faulting, floodplains, river migration, and the meander loop at Brickyard.

Instructor Bruce Baty is a geologist and retired Hellgate Highschool Earth Sciences teacher. He teaches geology classes and courses for the Montana Natural History Center. He has presented lectures and programs for Travelers’ Rest State Park, the Hellgate Gem and Mineral Society, and the Emily Dickenson Lifelong Learning Center.
