But Justice Sandra Day O'Connor thought of it differently, referring to herself more humbly as "the first cowgirl on the U.S. Supreme Court." Both descriptions are accurate. As a pragmatist and moderate, O'Connor was the swing vote on some of the most important issues of her time--like abortion, race and sex discrimination, and voting rights. But she did not wield her power as the powerful often do, retaining her sense of humor, remaining disciplined, and displaying humility and confident resoluteness in equal measure.
