Included in class fee: workshop clay, access to tools, firing of work completed in workshop.

Pick-up slip will be provided so participants will know how to check when their work has been fully fired.

Full list of recommended supplies available upon registration - all tools and materials will be available for the duration of the workshop but participants are welcome to bring their own supplies if preferred.

For students with some clay experience - intermediate wheel throwing or handbuilding skills will be necessary.

It isn’t always the size of an object that makes it powerful. A skillfully designed form with a rich surface can often upstage a grand vessel. During this 2-day intensive workshop explore Steve Kelly’s unique process, from throwing and altering forms, to stamping, drawing, etching and under glaze work. There will be demonstrations and hands-on projects each day. Students will make their own forms as well as work with forms made by the artist. Day one focuses on hand-building or wheel throwing cups, vases or pitchers as well as making clay stamps. On day two students will learn to stamp and etch the forms from the previous day. As well as decorate surfaces. Steve will focus on two processes that are very specific to his work, water etching and underglaze layering. Finished pieces will be fired by the studio and available for pick-up after the workshop.

About the Artist: Steve Kelly:
Steve Kelly is a potter and sculptor based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where he is the head ceramics professor at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. He also stewards workshops in the US as well as abroad. His work can be seen in numerous galleries and publications. His functional forms range from humble utilitarian vessels to more complex, abstract sculptural forms. His pottery and sculptures center around such questions as what objects and surfaces can tell us about who we are, how we relate to one another, and how we leave marks on the world around us. Teaching is an integral part of Steve’s practice. He has taught students throughout the US and as far away as Australia and Italy. Steve received his BFA from the University of Montana and his MFA from Maine College of Art. He apprenticeship with master potter Trew Bennet in the hills of Nelson County, Virginia.
