Narrated Tour of Glacial Lake Missoula Description:
Don't miss this rare chance to take a narrated tour of the Glacial Lake Missoula Auto Route!
About this event
Date: Wednesday, May 25th , 2022

Time: 9:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

After a two year gap, the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will resume giving a narrated tour of major geologic features resulting from the catastrophic draining of a huge lake along the Clark Fork River which rose nearly to the tops of Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo, 1000 feet above Missoula.

The tour will meet at the Montana Natural History Center, 120 Hickory Street, Missoula, at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25th, for a brief orientation of the whole story before leaving and is expected to return by late afternoon. Water and snacks will be provided, but you will need to bring your own lunch.

There will be stops at the giant ripples of the Camas Prairie, gulch fills along the Flathead River, kolks, rhythmites, and other landforms related to Glacial Lake Missoula. We will also be visiting Paradise Center to look at the topographic relief map and displays of the entire lake area, and the Visitor Center at the Bison Range, now managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe with new exhibits.

The tour will generally follow the auto tour map from our brochure, available in print form at MNHC. The map can also be downloaded in advance on your smartphone if you also download the free Avenza app. Instructions can be found in the brochure or on the ice Age Floods Institute website here:

Space is very limited so sign up soon! The cost is $15 for members of either GLM or MNHC; general public admission is $20.
